ASH WEDNESDAY

Shrove Tuesday was the day before Ash Wednesday when households cleared their kitchens of foods that were not permitted in Lent. Eggs, milk, butter and milk were put to good use in pancakes. Christians were also encouraged to go to Confession to the Priest to have their sins forgiven "Shriven" so that they started Lent with a clean slate.
Shrove Tuesday was the last day before the austerities of Lent began. It was a day of fun and community gatherings .Our English word Carnival comes from this time. It comes from two words of Latin origin which mean "farewell to meat".
At this time of year we shared pancakes made by the students for morning tea to raise funds to go towards Mary MacKillop House in Lima, Peru where the school set up for the care and education for families with children with disabilities was badly damaged in the recent mud slides.
The next day our school attended St Finbarr’s Church for the Ash Wednesday Service where the ashes were blessed and placed on the forehead of the students. Ash Wednesday marks the first day of Lent, the forty days in preparation for Easter.
